So, last week my excuse for having so many new books was my birthday; this week, I’m using the “but there was a sale” excuse. I found many books on my wishlist and couldn’t resist.
Here we go!
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards (This doesn’t sound like my thing exactly, but it’s been recommended to me a few times, so I was curious about it.)
Kraken by China Miéville (Apparently I have – no, I need to read something by Miéville! And this one sounded like something both the Man and I could enjoy. Double win!)
The Map of Time by Félix J. Palma (Time travel! Yippee!)
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda (I don’t read a lot of books related to India, but I always enjoy exploring unfamiliar territories!)
Room by Emma Donoghue (Confession time : I didn’t really want to read this one, and I most often have a really hard time with children voices in adult novels. But, after having it recommended to me so many times, I guess I had to see for myself what it was about.)
Watermelon by Marian Keyes (I’ve been told a couple times that I should read this one if I wanted to give Marian Keyes a try; so here we are!)
What did you add to your shelves recently? Have you read one of these books?
I loved The Memory Keeper’s Daughter but have friends who did not. I’ll be curious to see what you think. Stick with Room for a while – Jack’s voice had to grow on me.
I listened to Room a couple of years ago. It’s one I really didn’t want to read but I had a block of time and thought I’d give it a shot. I ended up liking it much more than I’d expected.
I have read ROOM, my son has read THE MAP OF TIME. I enjoyed ROOM even though it was an awful topic, and my son LOVED THE MAP OF TIME.

Secret Daughter sounds very good. I’ve read Room and it was good but didn’t love it as everyone else seems to. I wish the mother would have told her view also.

Kraken I simply must read and Room I so didn’t care for. I read one review saying no bad and didn’t listen and bought into the hype oh well I hope you enjoy it though.
Ahh, Room! One of my favorite books of two years ago! It was such an excellent story, and I can’t wait to see what you think of it! Also, I have Kraken as well, and have been dying to read it. I have heard that it’s amazing. Well, Mieville is amazing with anything he writes!
So confession, I read a couple of books by Indian authors but after a while, they all start sounding the same (hoho). However, I really would recommend The Feast of Roses by Indu Sundaresan. It is about Moghul India and the father of the dude who built Taj Mahal. Salim, I believe, and his love story with Nur Jahan the Empress who ruled from behind the veil. I’ll wait for your review on Room, it’s Canlit so I’m naturally wary. Oh and I recommend My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher. It is one of the most beautiful books I have read this year.
I’ve read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter & Watermelon and really liked them both – although they’re both very different. I’ve had Secret Daughter on my shelf for a while… since last Christmas, I think. I really need to get to it soon.
