toptentuesday (1)

Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week is posted a new Top Ten list idea that all bloggers are welcome to discuss.

Summer can be so many things! It was tempting to select ten books that were light and full of sun and beaches, but in the end I decided to go with a little bit of everything. After all, we do also need reading for the dark and stormy nights, or simply to escape to another world for the length of a day!

Here we go :

1 – Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler – I read this over 4 years ago and still think of it regularly. It’s a more emotional summer book than the usual “sunshine & road trips” ones, wrapped in very nice writing.

2 – Unbreak my Heart by Melissa Walker – A boat, the sea, a cute boy, a summer with family; this one has some very summery elements, but is also balanced by some serious growing-up from the main character.

3 – Nantucket Blue by Leila Howland – While this one dealt with grief, it also had some great moments of sunshine. A realistic and very enjoyable coming-of-age summer story!

4 – This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith – The Sweet Summer Romance any reader of young adult literature needs!

5 – Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith – The most serious from this list. Important issues, wonderful writing, great character. Loved it.

6 – Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke – Need some dark and chilly summer tale for a rainy summer night? This is the one you are looking for. Creepy and unsettling, it isn’t for everyone, but it will certainly entertain you!

7 – Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – With the movie coming next fall, now is the time to read this one if you haven’t already! Plus, it is a super engaging psychological thriller that will have you glued to the page. Go!

8 – Joyland by Stephen King – Get on Stephen King’s ride for a summer filled with nostalgia and a mysterious carny setting. This was a great surprise, and very different from his most horrific work.

9 – The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – I waited way too long to read this one but the experience was amazing! If you want to travel through time for a unique and hearbreaking and heartwarming experience, all with great writing, this is the book you need.

10 – The Martian by Andy Weir – Nothing good would happen if I got stuck on Mars; fortunately, the character of this novel is much more knowledgeable than I am, and his solo adventure on the red planet is one that will keep you reading through the hottest weathers!

Your turn now : which book(s) should I add to my summer beach bag?

  1. Great picks, like that you picked light reads and heavier ones. I really enjoyed Nantucket Blue, I felt it was a great read and would definitely be the perfect beach read. Gone Girl would be perfect too, you wouldn’t be able to put it down. Nice picks, here’s

    • Gone Girl is really a hard one to put down, especially once you get to the second part. Maybe it’s a bit dangerous to read it while sitting in the sun, one might forget to put sunscreen on!

  3. Nantucket Blue is a perfect read for summer <3 And I'm hoping to read Twenty Boy Summer myself! Great list!

    • Absolutely agree on The Book Thief! It’s amazing but will leave you in a very un-sunny mood.
