New Curiosities – week of August 6th

Posted by on August 9, 2012 8:31 pm in Features | 4 comments

No doubt about it, August is my favorite month; after all, it is the month that saw me coming to this world! And of course, there are plenty of gorgeous books coming out this month – which is why I chose August to launch my new “Curiosities” feature.

Curiosities will feature things of interest, mainly books, but also sometimes movies and other things I am curious to investigate. More precisely, New Curiosities it will feature new books being published in the current week or month, and that I have a curiosity for. It won’t be a complete list, but I do hope you get to discover some new books with me!

This one is coming a little late but I’ll be trying to be more on time for the future Curiosities; also keep an eye out for other curiosities on the blog!

New books coming out for the week of August 6th

Something Historical

  1. In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner
  2. City of Women by David R. Gillham
  3. Debutantes by Cora Harrison

In the Shadow of the Banyan is the story of a family in Cambodia, after the country fell to the hands of the Khmer Rouge. It isn’t a subject I am very familiar with, which makes this historical fiction novel all the more interesting to me. City of Women also has an intriguing premise; taking place in the Second World War, it features a soldier’s wife with heavy secrets, a SS officier, a strange blind man… As for Debutantes, it has one gorgeous cover! This YA novel takes place in 1923 in London; I’m sensing romance, drama, and beautiful dresses.

Something Hiding in the Shadows

  1. Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake
  2. The Black Isle by Sandi Tan
I read the first book, Anna Dressed in Bloodrecently enough and found it sufficiently horrific. I am looking forward to see what the author has in store for ghost-hunter Cas. As for The Black Isle, I first thought it was an adult historical fiction, but it seems it has some paranormal elements too, as the summary mentions the main character’s ability to see spirits. This is one I absolutely have to read!

Something Steamy

  1. The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow
  2. Innocent Darkness by Suzanne Lazear

Steampunk is definitely popular this year in YA fiction; these books are only two 2012’s selection of steampunk for readers of young adult fiction. In The Iron Wyrm Affair, illogical magic has turned London’s Industrial Revolution on its head; sorcery, danger and conspiracy are on the menu. In Innocent Darkness, a young woman faces her possible sacrifice when transported to Otherworld, the Realm of Faerie.

Something Speculative

  1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
  2. Glitch by Heather Anastasiu

Throne of Glass is THE YA fantasy novel everyone has been talking about these past few months! I received my copy last week and I am still a bit anxious to start it. But a young woman assassin, fighting for her freedom while investigating a mysterious killer? Sounds like winning ingredients! Glitch features Zoe, a young woman living in a world where there is not pain or war thanks to computer chips – until one starts malfunctioning, of course!

Something Supernatural

  1. Wake by Amanda Hocking
  2. Rift by Andrea Cremer
  3. Auracle by Gina Rosati

Rift is the first novel in the prequel to Nightshade – which I still have to read! I’m really hoping to like this one, but the reviews I have read where very conflicting, so I have no idea whether I’ll enjoy it. But even this prequel sounds good to me! As for Auracle, it has one original premise involving astral projection! I love this idea! And I’ll finish with Wake, because you guys still have one day left to enter my giveaway! It’s simple and easy for a chance to read this fun novel about sirens!
