Top Ten Tuesday – Books that have been sitting on my shelves for over a year, and that I want to read in 2012

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week is posted a new Top Ten list idea that all bloggers are welcome to discuss. 🙂

When I read that this week’s theme was a “freebie”, that we could choose to do a list about whatever our little readers’ hearts desired, I knew immediately what I wanted my list to be. Books have been piling my shelves and every time new ones arrive, the oldest ones are being pushed back or piled over. So for this list, I picked books that have been on my shelves for a year or longer. Let’s say it will be my own personal little reading challenge for 2012!

Top 10 Books that have been sitting on my shelves for over a year, and that I want to read in 2012 :

1 – Graceling by Kristin Cashore : This was one of the top novels I saw on the blogs when I started the Infinite Shelf. It really is time for me to read it; book 3 is coming out this year I believe, and I need to decide whether I’ll get it or not!

2 – Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson : Heard great things about this one, It’s just a tad big to carry on the subway. Maybe I can make it a weekend read?

3 – In the Woods by Tana French : I discovered this book through glorious reviews by some of my favorite bloggers and it immediately went to my shelves. I love a good mystery, but why I haven’t read it yet is a mystery in itself.

4 – A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith : This one was recommended to me by Amanda about two years ago. I had never heard of it (I grew up more with the French classics than the English ones) but it immediately caught my interest.

5 – I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith : Another classic I really need to read.

6 – Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier : She is one of my favorite authors, but I have to catch up on her most recent releases!

7 – Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder : Loved the first one, liked the second one; I’m really curious to see where I’ll stand on the last book of the Study series.

8 – Nefertiti by Michelle Moran : I had this one before I even started blogging. To say it’s been a while is a huge understatement!

9 – The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness : The reviews I have seen on this one have been very passionate, either positively or negatively. I must find out what this is about!

10 – Colour by Victoria Finlay : In fact, I already started this one. But then I got busy and kind of forgot about it. I’d love to pick it up again and finally get through it!

Though I know some readers keep a very small TBR pile and keep up with it better than I do, I also know that some readers are, like me, piling books on their shelves. I’d be curious to know, what books have you bought long ago, that you would really like to read in 2012?

  1. I really liked A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Read it twice about 30 years apart…LOL

  2. Graceling is one of those books I’ve been iffy about for a very long time now. I thought I should try it in audio instead of print, since I’m more tolerant of many books in audio, but when I got the audio from the library, I found out it was full-cast and I hate full cast audios. :/

  3. A few of these are on my list to read for the new year, and a few of them I have already read. I think you will really enjoy A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It’s a favorite of mine. Great list today!

  4. Great list! I don’t even want to think about all the books lingering on my shelves.

  5. Okay, I’m gonna get real with you.

GRACELING and THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO are two of my favorite books of all time. ALL of time.

Please, for the sake of your own bookish heart, give them a read. You will regret nothing!

  6. I have always wanted to read I Capture the Castle, Graceling, and The Knife of Never Letting Go. Good luck!

  7. I could make a very similar list, except I’d be afraid to note many of those books have been on my shelves for three years or more (yikes!). I Capture The Castle is a favorite of mine — hope you get to read and enjoy it! I was totally swept up in the story, and the setting was awesome.

  8. I’ve got Graceling and Fire on my kindle. I thought I’d wait until Bitterblue comes out and read all three at the same time. Fun list today. kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  9. Yes, yes, yes to Graceling!!!! I also want to read The Knife of Letting Go.

  10. Graceling?!?! Um, girl you need to pick that up asap! That book is fo real! LOVE IT! One of my top fav’s of all time.

  11. You seriously need to read Graceling! It well worth it. I promise.

I really need to make a list like this and stick to it! Some books I’ve had for way too long still sitting unread.

    Here’s my Top Ten.

  12. Ooh! Ooh! Yes, you HAVE to read The Knife of Never Letting Go. I’d actually like to reread those books this year.

  13. Argh, lists like this always make me feel guilty about my own unread books! I’ve joined a challenge to 50 of my pre-2012 books read by the end of the year, but I’ve had some of them for years and years.

I really do recommend Graceling though, like everybody else. Aside from how great it is, the new book in the series, Bitterblue, is coming out this Spring 🙂

I’ve had The Knife of Never Letting Go on my TBR for a long time too. Not as long as you, granted, but I still need to get round to it!

  14. This is a great idea, and a great list! Seriously, of the ones I’ve read (which is all except 6-8), all of them made it onto my best-of-the-year list except I Capture the Castle, which I liked well enough, but I know lots of people LOVE. Also, I’ve yet to read Nefertiti, but I’ve read some of Moran’s other books, and she’s fabulous!

  15. Thank you all for your input! I’m finishing Hallowed today and then Glow, and somewhere in between I intend to read Graceling, finally!

  16. i loved graceling! please do read it! i wrote a review if you’re interested.

i read fire study too. it was pretty good!

  17. I Capture the Castle is one of my favorites! I need to read the Tana French series this year too.
