This week, the book on my wishlist is the first in an historical saga that received great praise, with the third book, The Wild Rose, being published at the start of the month. Probably because I haven’t been reading as much historical fiction as I used to, I have been adding many of those on my wishlist recently, and this is the one at the top right now! (since Becoming Marie-Antoinette arrived yesterday! Squeee!)

The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

Summary from Goodreads :

The Tea Rose is a towering old-fashioned story, imbued with a modern sensibility that is fresh, compelling, and perfectly pitched for these times. This sweeping epic follows young Fiona Finnegan’s climb from the teeming streets of East London. Her dreams of leaving her home behind are shattered when her father, a dockworker and union organizer, is killed in an accident.

Crushing poverty, the loss of her lifelong love, and the destruction of her family quickly follow. When Fiona discovers that her fathers death was no accident, but a murder engineered by a ruthless tea baron bent on destroying the union, she flees to New York to save her own life. There, the ghosts of her past propel her to the very top of the city’s tea trade. A decade later, armed with tremendous wealth, she returns to London to reclaim her lost love and exact a breathtaking revenge.

  1. Interesting sounding book – in my head historical books are about kings and queens. This looks like it’s a different time of history than I’m used too! Good choice! 🙂

  2. I loved Revolution which is also by Jennifer Donnelly so I can’t wait for this one too! I also noticed your picks for the Best of 2011. Seems like we have the same taste in books. 🙂 Have a great weekend.

  6. Interesting choice. I like the fact that Fiona goes to America. I haven’t read any historical fiction like this that is also based in New York!

  7. I have had this book forever, but still haven’t read it. I need to remedy that…
