Miranda isn’t thrilled to be pulled from her fantastic, city life to spend part of her summer on Selkie Island. Her grand-mother, who she never really knew, has just passed away and it is left to Miranda and her mother to put the old woman’s house in order and sell it. Then Miranda meets Leo, and she’s not in such a hurry to leave the island anymore.
Sea Change is a cute, romantic summer story. Selkie Island is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun, and reading Miranda’s story will certainly put you in a summer mood!
Miranda was a sweet character, and though a bit generic, I loved that she was interested in science. It seems nowadays that most teen characters are dorky reading girls, and while that’s not a bad thing, it’s fun to read about one who has just about no interest in literature! It’s refreshing, really. I also loved that, even though she didn’t fit in with her new group of friends, she didn’t reject them and tried to get along with them. As for the family history, I just loved it. The author really developed many different aspects of the story, and that made Miranda’s life feel complete.
The book was more about the romance than about the paranormal aspect of mermaid lore, which was a bit disappointing considering how intriguing Selkie Island was! I loved the lore the author shared with us and I wanted more of it. Sadly, Friedman never confirms what’s real and what’s not and that drove me nuts. When I read a novel, I prefer to have clear answers than filling the blanks with my own suppositions. Maybe there’ll be a sequel of some sort? I would like that. If you’re not a fan of paranormal stories though, Sea Change might have just enough to keep you interested, but not too much to turn you off.
I also appreciated that the author avoided the traditional love triangle. Yes, there is a second boy involved, but it’s clear enough from the start that Miranda isn’t really into him. Miranda’s love story is more about realizing that, despite the past, she can love again. And that’s a beautiful lesson!
In the end, Sea Change was an adorable summer read, perfectly suited for a day at the beach or a day when you just need some sunshine in your life. While I didn’t find the story entirely satisfying, I enjoyed Friedman’s writing and would recommend her book to fans of light paranormal romances.

I love the cover, but I’ve read other stuff by Friedman and didn’t like it.
