Artsy Shelf – 23 – No body there

The “dress with no body” is a trend I noticed a while ago, and it’s one that seems popular enough. I ended up with about twice as many covers as I needed for this feature! Maybe I’ll do another one later, but here’s what I picked for today :

To be honest, this is a trend I don’t really get. I love a cute dress or a sexy pair of shoes as much as the next girl, but a dress standing by itself looks a bit sad to me. It doesn’t mean I don’t like those though!

I think the association of the white dress and devil horns on Confessions of a Rebel Debutante and the twirls decorating Vintage Magic are really cute ideas.

There’s no doubt in my mind though that my favorites are the last two ones; the fact that the dress is hanging on something makes it a little less weird. I actually love The Secret Lives of Dresses’ cover. The colors are beautiful and it would certain get my attention among other books in a bookstore. The dress is cute and sunny and there’s a vintage feel to it. As for The Thoughtful Dresser‘s cover, I think it suits the non-fiction book and it has some originality to it at the same time.

I want to hear your thoughts on this now! Are you charmed or turned off by bodiless dresses on book covers? Which of these if your favorite?

  1. I couldn’t imagine myself in any of them really, but the bright green one or goldish/yellow one appeal to me the most.

    Have a great week Kay.

  2. I love these covers! I think my favorites are Lucky and The Secret Lives of Dresses.

  3. I think they’re really lovely to look at but I know that I’d see these covers and immediately not be interested. They represent something girly – like ‘chicklit’ – in my eyes so I know that, unless I was looking for something light, I wouldn’t pick it up and read the back. Unfortunate. :S

  4. Another one is the cover of A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff (the book is not bad). I think I like the first one more, white on black would surely catch my attention in a bookshop

  5. I like the dresses pictured, and I think that I could see myself in a few of them, but they really don’t appeal to me as book covers. I haven’t picked up any of them, and they don’t make me curious to know what they are about.

  6. At first glance it looks cute and then if you look closely, it starts creeping me out. But I do like the cover of ‘Lucky’.

  7. I dont get the idea too, it’s weird. But i love the Black dress

  8. I’m all sorts of in love with the covers for The Secret Lives Of Dresses and The Thoughtful Dresser — in fact, I’d buy them based on the covers alone! I adore dresses — wearing them, buying them, looking at them… Great finds!

  9. I haven’t heard of Vintage Magic! I’m racing to Goodreads.

Personally, I adore dress covers 🙂

  10. I’m not really a fan of these kinds of covers but I think by favorite is the Vintage Magic one.

  11. I think Vintage Magic works because the dress is hung on a hanger, as with the last two. The rests are floating dresses which really look quite weird!

  12. I LOVE that yellow dress cover. Second choice is the Linda Grant. Third is the Vintage Magic. The rest, I don’t like.
