I’m very excited about the books I got this week! I’m cheating in fact, since the first two did not arrive in my mailbox but where found at the used bookstore. It had been ages since I’ve been there and I found so many books I wanted, it was really, really hard to choose!
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn : I have no idea where I heard of this book first, I just know I’ve been wanting to read it for a while. This book’s summary can only make you curious about it :
Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram,* “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel.
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant : Another book I have been wanting to read for so, so long, and I found this beautiful copy in hardcover that I just couldn’t leave on the shelf. It was cheaper than a new paperback version, so what could I do?
Leviathan by Paul Auster : I heard about this book while doing research for a paper on Sophie Calle, and I was curious about it. It’s been a long time since I read Auster, in fact I lost the book I had (the New York Trilogy) and never finished reading it. Hopefully this one will have a better faith!
Color by Victoria Finlay : Quoted by some of my teachers, and recommended by some of my favorite bloggers, I just had to get my hand on this “biography of colors”.

Ella Minnow Pea is so good!!
I’ve read both Ella Minnow Pea and The Red Tent, though both ages ago, but I really enjoyed both of them. Biblical stories aren’t generally my thing, but The Red Tent is REALLY well done and highly addictive.
You know that I read Paul Auster for the first time last year (the New York Trilogy, in fact!) and really enjoyed him! I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for your thoughts on Leviathan!

Ella Minnow Pea is great, Color is brilliant and so interesting (as is Findlay’s other book on jewels – I wish she’d write more!), and it’s been a long time since I read The Red Tent, but I remember really enjoying it as well. Good picks!
