Artsy Shelf – 14 – Hold that for me?

Pretty please, would you hold that for me? Thanks!

Of course, I couldn’t do this feature without mentioning Twilight! But there is more than a handful (get it? handful? I’m so funny!) of these covers on the market, with hands presenting stuff. While the idea gets a little repetitive, I like the result for most of these.

I have to give credit to Twilight : while the book was certainly not the first offering a simple element on a black background, it did start the trend (in my humble opinion) that literally took over the bookstores shelves – especially in the YA corner! When I read Twilight, a few years ago, I didn’t chose it because it was so popular (I hadn’t heard much about it at that time) : I picked it up because the cover was so different from the others around it that it caught my attention. I think I would still like it if I wasn’t so tired of seeing it everywhere!

I like the last two, Let it Snow and One week in December, because I simply love winter. It also makes me want to knit some mittens! (although I just bought red ones a couple weeks ago). I like that Let it Snow’s cover is a little off-center, and that One week in December is upside down. Also, this one’s soft colors really make it easy on the eyes.

The Art of Keeping Secrets and Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’ Easter are cute, but not exaclty my thing. I like The thief’s one though. The space occupied by the title is important, and makes it a little less about the hands.

Which cover grabs your attention more than the others? Do you think we see too many of these covers around?

  1. I like the cover for “One Week in December for the same reason that you like it – its unique angle and its soft colors.

The cover for “Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’ Easter” is attractive because of the contrast on the pink and the bright orange. Plus, why is the apple colored orange?

  2. These are adorable. I’m loving the peach cover. 😉

  3. I love the concept of these covers too! I think my favorite is Whitlin’ Dixie in a Nor’ Easter.

  4. Such gorgeous covers! How silly am I that I never realized those were mitten-covered hands on the front of Let It Snow? Haha. I think my favorite is One Week In December, because I love the color pallette, though they’re all gorgeous!

  5. There are so many books featuring covers similar to these (I’ve collected heaps), but I hadn’t seen two of the ones you posted: The Thief (which I really like) and One Week in December. Love these posts!

  6. I like The Thief of all, as its a painting as opposed to the photos. Also, it’s the only non chick-litty cover, the only one I would probably notice in the bookstore, as it feels like a fantasy or gothic mystery of sorts.

  7. Hands were the theme for last year…wonder what this year will be?????

  8. I liked One Week in December the best. The hands were facing the other way as if it was your own hands out in front of you.

  9. Love this post…very clever. My favorite is The Thief. I find the dirty hands a bit intriguing.

  10. I love your Artsy Shelf feature and I especially love this one! 🙂 I was thinking of having a feature like this on my blog, when I found yours, and you probably do it better than me, so I ditched my idea.
