Thoughts on : My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
Genre : Thriller
Stand alone
About the Book :
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.
My Thoughts :
Oh, what a pleasure this book was!
My Lovely Wife is the kind of thriller that is best enjoyed if you know very little about it. The summary is succinct, but believe me : it says just enough.
There’s something about being inside the criminal mind that is absolutely fascinating, and this book is no exception. This one is, for me, the perfect exemple of a page-turner. I was hooked from the beginning. The story is a bit unsettling (though not as much as You) yet gripping at the same time.
The writing is what I’d call “efficient”. It’s quick, witty, no extra words or lyrical prose. It keeps you focused on the characters and the plot, and makes it really easy to get carried away by the story.
One of my favorite aspects of the book were the family dynamics. The books I’ve read that were narrated from the point of view of the criminal mostly featured loner types, isolated characters who didn’t have to worry too much about being caught by their loved ones. So I really liked seeing how parents and children reacted to each other here. They felt real to me, and I was constantly worried for the kids.
My Lovely Wife is an addictive read that will constantly thrill you, even if you see some of the twists coming. The plot is a captivating one, the characters are complex and the tension will keep you on the edge of you seat page after page. And it’s got quite a good ending, too, all things considered. If you enjoy reading thrillers, I can only recommend that you read My Lovely Wife right away!
(Also, I really like this cover. A perfect fit for the story!)
