Artsy Shelf – 20 – In a bun

There are many, many, many covers featuring women turning their backs on the reader; those I present to you today are presented like portrait shots, only from the back, and all have their hair in something like a bun. Here we go :

It’s hard to pick a favorite; I’m not head over heels for any of those, but some of them I do like. Cleopatra is the one that gets my attention at first sight; the woman isn’t only back to the reader, but it feels as if she deliberately turned her head away from us, hiding her face. For this reason, she is the most mysterious to me. I also like the tones, subtle enough despite her pink dress.

Fallen Grace would be my second favorite, because I love the colors so much (and I love red hair, but sadly, I look like a dead carrot with it). Girl in Translation would be very close behind : I love the colors and the fact that it’s a crayon holding her hair!

What do you think? Have you had enough of seeing this side of women on book covers? Any of those catches your eye?

  1. I’m not a huge fan of any of these either, but Girl In Translation is my favourite of the bunch. I like the colours and the overall simplicity of it.

  2. Wow, I never noticed this pattern! I have to agree that Girl in Translation has a great cover – it seems to fit the title really well. Overall, I think these are all pretty “safe” covers, even though some are quite pretty!

  3. I’m not crazy about any of them either. I think Girl in Translation is probably my favorite.

  4. I <3 the Cleo cover

  5. Hm. Beyond the Blossoming Fields would be my favourite image. But I don’t like the way the text was designed into it. If the text were less intrusive, it could’ve been a powerful cover.

I also like the design of Dreaming of Amelia, including the text. Although I wouldn’t have picked it up if I saw it in a bookstore because it doesn’t look like the type of story I might enjoy.

  6. i think ‘fallen grace’ caught my eye first just because of the bright color of her hair. there’s also an aura around that makes it radiate almost.

  7. My favorite on this subject would be this one : http://bibliojunkie.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo.jpg

    steely fragility

  8. My local used bookstore had a display of all books of with covers that featured the back of a woman. It was very funny that they noticed the trend and then decided to make an entire display of it!

  9. The Cleopatra cover would have to be my pick out of that bunch. It is mysterious, like you said.

  10. Funny! I did not like Under the Temple of Heaven; I am looking forward to Girl in Translation though.

  11. Good finds! The hair-in-a-bun theme definitely seems to be a trend, though I’d never thought about it before. I love the cover for Girl In Translation; that blue is really eye-catching. It’s a clean, simple look, too, and those covers are often my favorites.

  12. I have told you that your Artsy Shelf is one of my favourite features in the blogosphere, right? Love! In this bunch, my favorites are the two with subtler colors for some reason: Beyond the Blossoming Fields and Undress Me in The Temple of Heaven.

  13. I love these posts! I always try to keep my eye out for trends and then I’ll see one on your post and “DUH, Why didn’t I think of that?”
