“Filling the Shelf” is in fact a “In my mailbox” but with a title that suits my blog. :) Click here to see what others have received in their mailboxes!

The Giver, by Lois Lowry : Apparently, that’s a well known book (prize winning and all), but being pretty snobby, I probably wouldn’t have ever thought about reading it if it wasn’t for some awesome reviews of it I recently read. See? Book blogging is useful!

The Year of the Flood, by Margaret Atwood : I’ve been waiting for this one, and Chapters was selling it with 40% off, which means I got it for less than 20$! Plus, I love buying books that I know both the Man and I plan on reading.

Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon : This one has been on my TBR list for so long! I really like the new paperback cover of it. I’m hoping to read it soon!

Hate List, by Jennifer Brown : This one’s story sounds very dark and emotional, but reviews have been great. I wasn’t planning on reading it soon, but I looked at it at the bookstore and read about 20 pages of it before deciding to bring it home.

Specials and Extras, by Scott Westerfeld : I knew as soon as I started Uglies that I would be reading the whole series, so I made sure I had all books ready! Good thing I did, ’cause I’m going through these faster than through a chocolate cake!

So, what was in your mailbox this week?

  1. I have a Coetzee (Summertime) and a Philip K Dick (Man In The High Castle) coming up.

Just wanted to say : Shadow Of The Wind is absolutely amazing. I was hooked on to it from the very first page, which begins in the Cemetery Of Forgotten Books. How can you not fall in love with a book that starts there? Hope you enjoy it.

  2. My husband had the same reaction to The Uglies! He loved the whole series!

  3. Yah! I hope you love the Giver.

  4. As you know, I recently acquired a copy of Shadow of the Wind as well, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m trying to keep my expectations at a minimum, but there’s been such a buzz about it on book blogs I can hardly keep from expecting it to rock my world!

And I read the new Atwood a few weeks back (no review on my site yet, as I’m reviewing it for the October issue of BookPage, so check back then!). I’ll be really curious to hear your thoughts on it when you do get around to reading it… If you read and loved Oryx & Crake, then I think there is a high probability that you will love this one too!

  5. The Giver is an absolutely incredible book. One of my absolute favorites.

  6. Uncertainprinciples : I have yet to read Philip K. Dick. I always tell myself that I have to try at least one of his books some day! And I’m glad you liked Shadow of the wind! I read the first 2 or 3 pages at the bookstore, and that’s what finally convinced me to read it!

Kathy : It’s a really addictive one! A good mix of action and reflexion, I believe.

Juju : I hope so too! I hadn’t heard of it until recently, but many readers seem to have read it already!

Steph : Yes, I remember now that you got that book not too long ago. Like you though, I’m trying to keep my expectations on the low; after hearing so many positives things on this one, it’s hard not to expect something huge of it! As for Atwood, I haven’t read Oryx and Crake yet, either, although it is on my TBR list (which is without end, to be honest!) I can’t wait to read your review of it!

3m : Oh, that’s good to hear! I have very little idea of what’s waiting for me with this one, but it’s good to hear from one more blogger who liked it too.

  7. I’ve seen quite a few reviews for Hate List. I can’t wait to see yours. I’m still unsure about whether to put it on my wishlist.

  8. I’m reading Shadow of the Wind right now, finally.
