Sunday Salon : Too Good Reading and a Request
I’ve had a very fun week of reading this week; all four books had good humor and great stories. Which makes me worried; am I getting better at finding books that suit me, or am I just due for a batch of really atrocious reading? What do you think: does one become better at finding great reading?
But let’s get to the essential : the books!
Books I read this week :
- Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict, by Laurie Viera Rigler
- How to Build a House, by Dana Reinhardt
- Le Journal d’Aurélie Laflamme 2, by India Desjardins (French Canadian YA)
- Le Journal d’Aurélie Laflamme 3, by India Desjardins (French Canadian YA)
So far I’m holding good on my promise of posting more reviews and a little less of all the other stuff. This week, excluding the Sunday Salon, out of 6 posts 3 were reviews. This week I also posted my 40th review! I feel like the blog is slowly taking form and making its own little mark in the wild wide world of book blogging.
Books I reviewed this week :
- Two Way Street, by Lauren Barnholdt
- Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict, by Laurie Viera Rigler
- Never let me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro
I also made a small comic on what my typical day looks like ; if you haven’t yet, you can laugh at my procrastination problem (and maybe, yours?) right here.
Today I will be reading The Demon’s Lexicon, and I’m not sure I’ll do much else (except overdue laundry). I started reading it last night, and it’s just so good! Since we’ve been watching Supernatural episodes this week, I really was in the mood for a book like this one (demons! action! magic! hot guys!) So far (I’m about page 64-65), it’s really well written with just the right pace of action and description. Plus, I like the fact that although it’s presented as YA fiction, it doesn’t feel like YA as much as a book with YA characters.
If I do pull my nose out of this one, I might also consider reading a little more of How to be a Canadian. This book is hilarious! I’ve already had many good laughs with this one.
Now though, I have a request for you : please, help me decide what to read next! Here is a list of the books I still have to read for my Summer Reading Challenge. So far I’ve read 8 of my 24 list (9 if you count my current read), but I’m not sure which one I should attack next.
- The Ghost Writer, by John Harwood
- Santa Olivia, by Jacqueline Carey
- Warbreaker, by Brandon Sanderson
- Lock and Key, by Sarah Dessen
- Dead until Dark, by Charlaine Harris
- Sloppy Firsts, by Megan McCafferty
- Gone, by Michael Grant
- The Vampire Diaries, by L.J. Smith
- Take me There, by Susan Colasanti
- Tempting Faith Di Napoli, by Lisa Gabrielle
- Suite Scarlett, by Maureen Johnson
- This Lullaby, by Sarah Dessen
- In the Woods, by Tana French
- The Awakening, by Kelley Armstrong
- Nefertiti, by Michelle Moran
I would like to see your thoughts on Suite Scarlett. I have that book but haven’t gotten around to reading it, though I loved 2 others by Maureen Johnson. Also, Lock and Key would be good as I’ve never read SArah Dessen and that’s the book by her I have now.
(btw, I didn’t get to comment on that comic before, since I’d just gotten back home, but it was SO CUTE!)
Definitely In The Woods. :))
I suggest Nefertiti!
TSS: The Jewel Trader of Pegu by Jeffrey Hantover
Congratulations on hitting the 40th mark! What about Dead Until Dark? Have a great week.
I haven’t read any of the books you listed, but I vote for The Ghost Writer for a selfish reason: I’ve seen mixed reviews and I’d love one more opinion to help me decide if I wan to read it 😛
In the Woods, and then immediately go out and get The Likeness which was one of my fave novels last year!
I loved Nefertiti by Michelle Moran. I’ve heard great things about Sarah Dessen’s books too.
I’ve really enjoyed reading a lot more since I started blogging. I think it’s partly because of the great recommendations from other bloggers, but I’m also starting to get a better idea of the types of books that really ‘work’ for me. You’ve had a great week!
My vote is for Dead Until Dark or The Vampire Diaries. They are both such amazing books, and must reads!
I don’t know if I’m better at selecting good books or not, but I do know that my mood can affect my reading. I haven’t read any of the books you’ve listed, but I vote for Nefertiti, because I’ve heard it’s fantastic!
I know I have gotten better at picking books in the last couple of years…maybe I am just better at knowing what I like 🙂
Re: your next read…I’ve read In the Woods (which I liked but didn’t love), and Nefertiti (which I loved). None of the other books on your list are ones I’ve read…so can’t advise you there 🙂
I’d vote for Nefertiti. It’s a fantastic book, I know I loved it!
I definitely get better at figuring out what I’ll like. I like almost everything that I choose to read for this reason.
After a while you tend to know what you like, which definitely influences your choices. Although the problem with that is it can be hard to get out of your comfort zone.
In the Woods is on my own short list so I will recommend the same for you. But from the looks of that last, anywhere you choose to go would work. Happy reading!
I vote Vampire Diaries! That was my favorite series of books when I was thirteen.
