The Artsy Shelf – 3 – A pair of shoes and a white dress

After my last feature on “Barefoot book covers“, it seemed only natural to do one on shoes.

But crap, that’s a LOT of book covers!!!!

I could make many, many features focussing on shoes with feet in it, shoes without feet, fur boots, rain boots, sexy shoes, ugly shoes, etc. Mostfly women shoes, too – are you surprise? If I look at those covers, it seems a lot of people in the book industry believe in The Shoe as a book seller.

What do you think : can shoes sell a book to you, more than a pair of gloves or a pearl necklace?

While looking for the covers I would choose for the feature, I noticed that many of them had a girl or woman wearing a white dress, with a nice, sexy pair of shoes. 3 of those are young adult fiction, and I’m sure you can guess which ones!

I think my favorite is Confessions of a First Daughter ; I can’t resist red shoes!

Although, if we wanna talk about red-shoes-covers, I have to mention that the recently published Prada and Prejudice has an awesome red-shoes-cover too! When I first saw it, I thought, “I don’t care what it’s about! I wanna read it!”

  1. I love the Prada and Prejudice cover. It cracks me up every time I see it. I like th slipper in the Vision in White cover.

  2. OOh, fun feature! Thank you for including Prada & Prejudice! Interestesting fact: The shoes in Prada & Prejudice were originally purple pumps. Once they did the cover, I had to change it to red. But I have grown to love them as shiny red heels!

I <3 the confessions of a first daughter cover. Also– did you notice the YA covers have an awkward, shy pose, and the adult ones don't? interestin constrast.

    • Hi Mandy! I could not not include “Prada and Prejudice”! It’s one of my favorite covers right now, and the story sounds good too! I’m thinking of getting it this week if I go downtown! And I think those shoes look just perfect in red (I have a long love history with red shoes!)

I noticed the same thing, the YA poses all have the feet turned in this awkward way, something I haven’t seen much in adult fiction. It’s cute, though! 🙂

  3. I love these posts! The first cover you feature has a lookalike.

  4. Nicole : I do too! I usually don’t fall for the too “romantic” cover, but I think Vision in White’s one is beautifully done, just enough fluff but not too much. And you’re right, the slipper is really nice!

avisannschild : good, cause I like them too! 😀 And I love to see lookalikes, thank you for your link! It’s always interesting to see how one picture is used in different ways!

  5. I love the Prada & Prejudice cover! Have you read it yet? What did ya think?

    • No I haven’t yet!
But I’m supposed to go downtown at the end of the week, and I want to get it with maybe another book. The cover just screams to me “Read Me!!!!”

  6. I have a policy of never buying books with shoes on the cover. those are cute though 🙂

    • Ooh that’s funny! If you pass by again, may I ask, why? 🙂

  7. I really feel like going shoe shopping now.

  8. Who knew about the YA shoe fetish? Great post. In children’s books lately socks have been big on the covers.
