Musing Mondays; the infamous TBR pile!

I decided to answer this week question, as my TBR pile is very dear to me! You can see this week’s question by clicking here. Have fun!

As a follow up to last week’s question, Joseph asked how you keep track of your tbr list. Do you have a paper list or on your computer? Do you take it with you when you go shopping? How do you decide what gets added to it?

Basically, my TBR pile is my desk. Everytime I buy a book, it sits on my desk, waiting to be read. I used to keep them on a seperate shelf in my bookshelf, but then I would often forget about them. Having them under my eyes is a good remember, as weel as a great incentive when I’m tempted to buy the whole Amazon’s book section!

I don’t keep a precise track of the books I have, but I recently put up the Paper Brick Wall page here on the blog. It’s not complete, but it gives a good idea of what’s on my desk. I’ll have to post pictures soon so everyone can witness the disaster! 😛

As for how I decide what gets added to it, it’s a mix of everything: blogs or readers communities, other people’s suggestions, books from an author I’ve already read from, books that cath my eye in the bookstore, etc. I’m more selective now though, and I try to borrow more books from the library instead of buying-buying-buying.

  1. I just keep all my TBRs in stacks on the floor and on the bookshelf (mixed in with the other books… I may not remember what a book was about, but I’ll always remember if I read it). I generally am able to just keep in mind what books I want to read when I’m at the bookstore (I have a freakish memory), but I do also keep tabs on books I want to read through my Good Reads account – I have a book shelf for “to read” books, and another label for books that I’d like to read but don’t have in my possession. That way I can remember what to request at the library!

I do like your idea of the Paper Brick Wall (kinda like the Yellow Brick Road!) addition to the blog. Then I could get perpetual feedback on what to read next (not that I’d listen to it… 😉 ).

  2. I borrow most of the books I read from the library as well. I wish they had a want to read list feature.

  3. my TBR pile is currently housed in a striped canvas bag…i carted it with me to florida–i’m here on vacation, staying with my parental units! i’ve been here 2 days and have read a grand total of 30 pages. very bad. it’s just too nice outside!!!

  4. Steph: I’ve got quite a good memory on books too! I’ve never made the mistake of buying twice the same book (unless it was intentional, which, by definition, makes it not a mistake :P)I only keep a big “wishlist” on amazon, even though I don’t buy all of my books there; I have a Good reads account too, but I haven’t updated it in months :-/

Nise: Borrowing is more recent for me, but it definitely saves us money! 🙂

Nat: Florida! Lucky! Here it’s cold, we had snow yesterday. Yes, snow! It’s great you’re TBR pile can be carried around, hopefully you’ll read more in the coming days. Maybe you could take a book outside with you though?
