Audio narration : Marisa Calin
Genre : YA, Fantasy
Series : Daughter of the Pirate King, book 1

About the Book  :

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

My Thoughts :

This book was so much fun! I went in expecting nothing and was completely taken by surprise by how much I enjoyed it.

I listened to this one and I believe it was the perfect choice for me. The narrator gave life to the characters and it felt as though she really enjoyed becoming Alosa. She had just the right tone whether the scene required humor or tension, and made the adventure all the more enjoyable.

As for the book itself, there’s a few aspects in particular that I enjoyed, and that, in my opinion, made Daughter of the Pirate King stand out from other YA fantasy novels.

Let’s start with our main character, Alosa. And oh, how I loved Alosa. Calculating, witty and cutthroat, yet extremely likable. It’s so refreshing, in a YA novel, to have a character actually follow through with their threats. I’m so tired of assassins who never kill, of supposedly dangerous characters being sugarcoated! I simply can’t take them seriously. Fortunately, Alosa is not one of these. She kills if she needs to, just as you’d expect from any pirate. She earns her place.

The other aspect I particularly enjoyed was simply how fun the book was. Here there’s no end of the world lurking around the corner, no evil government to take down, no dictator leading its kingdom to anarchy. The tone is much more Pirates of the Caribbean than Hunger Games. I actually found myself laughing out loud a few times through the book. There’s also a bigger fantasy element that comes into play in the second part of the book, and I really liked how it gave a bit more depth to the worldbuilding without affecting the tone of the story.

As for the romance, it wasn’t anything groundbreaking, but I liked both partners separated and together, and I enjoyed how it played out.

All in all, this book was definitely a success for me. I went and grabbed book 2 as soon as I finished it, and plan on starting it later today!
