About the Book  :

For Callie Grey, turning thirty means coming to grips with the fact that her boss (and five-week fling) is way overdue in his marriage proposal. And way off track because Mark has suddenly announced his engagement to the company’s new Miss Perfect. If that isn’t bad enough, her mom decides to throw her a three-oh birthday bash in the family funeral home.

Bad goes to worse when she stirs up a crazy relationship with the town’s not so warm and fuzzy veterinarian, Ian McFarland, in order to flag Mark’s attention. So Ian is more comfortable with animals…. So he’s formal, orderly and just a bit tense. The ever-friendly, fun-loving and spontaneous Callie decides it’s time for Ian to get a personality makeover. But dang, if he doesn’t shock the heck out of her, she might actually fall for Vermont’s unlikeliest eligible bachelor….

My Thoughts :

Romance isn’t a genre I naturally gravitate to; when it comes to it, I would say Kristan Higgins is my exception to the rule (the other being the occasional historical romance). I’ve tried others, but none that connects with me the way Kristan Higgins does!

In a way, if you’ve read one of Kristan Higgins’ romance novels, you’ve read them all. As often with the genre, it’s formulaic in a good way, and it’s really not about what will happen, but how it will happen. And it’s cute and heartwarming, filled with adorable moments that make you go “awww”.

What I most appreciated was how Callie was a multi-faceted character. She has a career she cares for, a lovely dog, close friends. I also appreciated how her family was part of the story. She’s got a colorful, big and diverse group of loved ones, her grumpy grand-father being one of the most entertaining in the book. Her world is so complete that, when she falls in love, it’s easy to root for her and Ian.

And as a love interest, Ian is great. He is pretty typical and yet, it works! There’s definitely chemistry between him and Callie. I enjoyed every moment they had together. And I liked that, despite being a bit of a klutz, Callie didn’t become completely useless in their scenes. She was quick on her feet, entertaining, clever at times.

Bonus points for Vermont, which I love 🙂

It’s safe to say that, once again, I enjoyed Kristan Higgins writing. When I feel a bit down of overwhelmed, she’s exactly what I need, and I’m glad to have more of her books on my shelves already!
