Pages : 272
Genre : Graphic Novel, Comics
Stand Alone
My Rating : 4.5/5

About the Book  :

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

My Thoughts :

I loved Nimona so much, I can’t count the number of times I’ve picked it up since I’ve read it just to reread a page or two! This story was everything.

First, the illustrations. Noelle Stevenson’s style is charming, simple yet very expressive. The tones are soft but the story still feels very colorful. It’s an extremely engaging style that leaves a lot of space for the reader’s imagination without leaving you confused about the events.

And how to describe the story? The scenes include everything from magic to watching TV to science experiments. It’s a surprising – but perfectly balanced – mix of contemporary ideas and fantasy setting. It keeps the story entertaining and surprising, without getting too weird. I was charmed, to say the least! This all comes together with amazing characters, who are just complex enough to have you intrigued with their next plan.

And Nimona’s own story was amazing. I loved her transformation(s) (in more sense than one!) through the pages and I felt so many things through her, from heartbreak to anger to complete joy.

I was really surprised by how much I loved Nimona. When cutting down the story to its basics, it’s nothing new I haven’t read before. But the creator’s style and her humor made it fresh and exciting, and I loved every page of it. Kids of all ages will enjoy this one, for sure- and I need more Noelle Stevenson in my life!
