About the Book  :

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

My Thoughts :

What a nice little surprise was Everything Everything!

A couple weeks ago, I felt the sudden impulse to read some contemporary YA novel, preferably a short one. I grabbed this one not sure what to expect, and ended up finishing it in a couple of days – a rare occurrence this season with the novel format.

Nicola Yoon’s writing is lovely and so easy to get into. From the first few words I immediately connected with Madeline and was intrigued by her condition, and the closed bubble she found herself in. I was afraid that a limited environment would mean a limited experience; thankfully, Nicola Yoon explores her character’s life in a very vivid way, with images and conversations and emails pacing the story. I love when authors play with formats and this was no exception.

The romance is expected and predictable, but I really enjoyed it anyway. Madeline and Olly’s connection, while a bit quick, felt real enough.

I think some readers will love the ending, and others will hate it. Without spoiling anything, I at least want to say that I’m kind of on the fence about it. As a story, it worked. It leaves you with a true sense of conclusion, it’s realistically written, it explores something different. But it’s also a bit frustrating, and I found myself wondering if the author didn’t take the easy way out on this one…

All of this being said, I really liked this book and would gladly read more from the author. And isn’t that cover lovely?

  1. I loved this book! I’m sure some people hate the ending but I loved it.

  2. Indeed, that cover is lovely 😀 I have never read a book about a “bubble” girl – it sounds like this one was a pleasant surprise 🙂
