My own Summer Read-o-Thon!

A couple days ago, I noticed I was lacking motivation to pick up a book. Then, as I looked through the list of what I recently read, I realized that most of these books had been galleys and arcs. While I enjoyed most of them, I was missing the spontaneity of picking up a book by myself, just because I felt like it; it was clear that I needed a break from galleys so that I could read a few books from my shelves! Since we are leaving for Paris (where I’ll mostly be bringing my galley-full ereader) on August 2nd, now seemed like the perfect opportunity to exercise my free will!

So from today July 18 to August 1st, I am having my own little read-a-thon! My first pre-selection consists of :

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

How my Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski

Golden by Jessi Kirby

Five Summers by Una Lamarche

This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith (reading now!)

Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith (planning to read next!)

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler

As you can see, for now I’m planning on going through my summery YA contemporaries, but who knows? I might decide to go with something literary! Or a gripping mystery! Or maybe something historical! Or maybe I’ll just pick some other YA contemporaries (I have a lot of these!)

Have you made some summer reading plans too? What is one book I should absolutely be reading this summer (YA contemporary or not)?

  1. I read Golden last month, I really enjoyed it even though it hadn’t been on my radar originally. I’m making my way through How My Summer Went Up in Flames now (among several other books, lol).

I hear you, though, whenever I feel like not reading, it’s because I’m forcing myself to read things that I’m not exactly excited about in that exact moment, and I need to take a break from that pressure and read for myself a little bit – pick and choose what I’d like to read. Not always in the case of galleys and ARCs but challenges or library books even (they seem to come in big groups for some reason, haha).

Have fun with your own personal read-a-thon!

    Bree 🙂

    • Oh! Golden! Had you read the author’s previous work? I read both of her books and really enjoyed them, so I am looking forward to reading it.

And yes, I completely get what you mean. It happened to me when in school too, and I still do it with library books. Especially since I am a moody reader; I’ll go to the library, pick 5 mysteries, read 2 and then be in the mood for something completely different! Haha!

  2. No summer reading plans here – just trying to find a few minutes to read each day. Have fun!

    • That’s already the best of plans! 🙂

  3. Oh, The Moon and More! That’s been on my TBR pile for a while now, and I still haven’t gotten to it. Though I’m hoping to soon, once I’m finished reading this other book. I’ve never felt that kind of pressure, so I maybe wouldn’t understand, but I can imagine. I think it’s great you’re deciding to pick your own books to read, ease off some stress. Have fun with your readings!

    • Ah, it’s not such bad pressure though! I count myself lucky to get to read some galleys, but sometimes it’s also fun to just select any book from my shelf when I feel like it!
Let me know how you love The Moon and More! I haven’t read any of the most recent novels by Sarah Dessen but I am looking forward to doing so!

  4. hey! i’ve missed you too! I’ve just been super busy with school, but thankfully today was the last day so now I have three weeks to myself and you can bet I plan on spending it catching up on some reading. All the books you have preselected looks awesome! I’ve read ockler twenty boy summer and really enjoyed it. I’ve been meaning to pick up her other books so i’ll be interested to know what you think of the book of broken hearts.

Ahhh France!! I’m so jealous! I can’t wait to see all the beautiful pictures I know you’re going to take. How long are you planning on being over there? Shoot me a postcard! 🙂

    • Hi! So nice to see you here! 😀
Wow that last day must have felt good! I hope you do get to relax and take care of yourself in your vacation time!
We will be staying in France for 3 weeks! Mainly in Paris, but with a little trip to Marseilles and another to Mont Saint-Michel. Email me your address and I will send you a postcard!

  5. Paris? Oh, what a great trip to be taking!!! Spontaneity is the best and I love the books you picked out!

    • We are looking forward to it! 🙂

  6. I have a huge stack of books that I want to read this summer though I’ve been dipping into spontaneous reading too. Good luck with the read-a-thon.

    • Spontaneous reading is always refreshing, especially when you have a lot of reading obligations (be it books for reviews or for work, school, etc). I hope you get to read some awesome books this summer!

  7. Hi! It`s always so nice to read your blog. I`ve made my first summer reading list this year, that includes 20 books (I know, quite a lot): from romances, to contemporary YA, to horror, to some nice fantasy and travel literature. Actually, I have a few Sarah Dessen books (didn`t like “That Summer”) on my list and Sarah Ockler`s “The Book of Broken Hearts” because you have mentioned them before. I also have Doktorski`s “How My Summer Went Up in Flames” on my list, finished it lately and liked it A LOT! Such an easy going and fun road trip/ romance novel. Another book from summer reading I loved is Tracey Garvis-Graves “On the Island”. You may want to check it out.
Have fun with your free choice reading 🙂

    • I always like to make lists, and I usually make them longer than they need to be so that I’ll have more choices to pick from!
I am so glad to hear you liked How My Supper Went Up in Flames! It looks like so much fun! I’m sad to hear you didn’t like That Summer though, hopefully if you try Dessen again you will enjoy it more? I know that my friends who enjoy Dessen often say That Summer isn’t her best, so there is still hope!
And it’s probably time that I finally read On the Island, heard so many great things about it!

      • Yeah, I heard that too, that other Dessen`s novels are better. I started Along For the Ride this morning and so far it`s quite promising. I hope it will be good. I`m usually not that much into romance books, but I simply love, love, love On the Island. I hope you`ll love it too! Five Summers sounds interesting, and I should probably read Golden too. Too bad, summer is too short for all summer reads.
