While in Paris – Napoleon III’s apartments

Posted by on September 8, 2010 2:02 am in other | 57 comments

After a nice meal at the Louvre’s café, we headed back to the rooms with no particular plan. We knew we didn’t have enough time to see everything and we decided we would go quickly through the decorative arts.

One thing that caught our attention though, were the Napoleon III’s apartments. I had heard a lot about those in my decorative arts class, and so we took some time to visit this sumptuous part of the museum.

To say the place is luxurious is an understatement : everywhere is gold, rich colors, shiny accessories, beautiful paintings on the ceiling, detailed carpets… Wherever we looked, something amazed and surprised us.

It’s hard to imagine people actually lived in places like these. It’s a bit too much for my taste, but it definitely leaves you speachless.

This little room was definitely more to my taste ; I just love how the chairs’s backs are shapes like little harps.

And finally, the dining room. I almost have the same.

There’s definitely more to see, but pictures don’t translate the impact all this gold has in reality!

I’ll have maybe a couple more posts on the Louvre and some of the art I loved there, so I hope I’m not boring all of you with those. But after that, I’ll also have pictures to share of other places I visited and loved! There were so many : I believe I just fell in love with Paris!

  21. The gold filling these ornate chambers was taken from India when the French empire was trying to colonize India and the British won instead. What gold and gems the French could not take, the British Empire did. Of course, now when you visit Indian palaces, you will have to imagine not only the gold in those magnificent halls but also in the the now empty store rooms. When you visit India, and are tempted to say ‘How poor’, remember these ornate, gold filled chambers in Paris and smile. The answer lies in history which is only 200 years old. Luckily, the British left India the English language and the rail road in exchange. The French gave India pasteurized milk. It took India centuries and millennia to collect and store this gold. It took the French and British Empire a few decades to ‘take’ from India, and declare the country – undeveloped and ‘poor’. India’s reply was through men like Gandhi – ‘Please, leave with nonviolence’ and yogis – ‘I shall teach you yoga for free, so that you may charge insane amounts from your country people for the same art to stay healthy’. Ponder, when you visit and stunningly photograph your next destination about its role in history and civilization.

  22. Nice palace. We have little in the way of that here in South Florida, except the Vizcaya mansion of John Deere. Please check out my surrealist art blog at minimarty.

BTW, I can extract a lot more detail out of your Napoleon pics, if you’re interested. no charge.

  24. The ceilings are incredible!

  25. Amazing, amazing pictures! Wow it would feel like a sin to eat at that table in your PJ’s. I for sure would not fit in. What a transition we have made in style. Great post, keep the pictures coming!

  32. great design on this page, very classy.

  33. Oooh la la. This is what my fantasy Parisien pied-a-terre looks like. 😉

  34. These photos do a wonderful job of conveying a sense of the world of Charles Louis Napoleon and his Second Empire. Opulence, even slightly garish, sumptuous and grand. There are a number of excellent biographies of Napoleon III, and a number of good works about France during the Second Empire.

  35. Looks amazing. The pattern on the carpet in dining room is so similar to others I’ve seen in Europe – must be popular design. Great photos and post.

  36. La décoration de ces châteaux sont incroyables ! Je suis allée à Paris visiter quelques châteaux de la Loire, toujours impressionnant.

Fais-tu des critiques de livres français?

  37. trash!
