About the Book  :

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all she’s gained.

When a new danger appears, Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds, putting not only herself at risk, but every Elite. In order to preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

My Thoughts :

As always with sequels, I’ll be keeping this short and spoilerless!

The Midnight Star is the third and final book in the The Young Elites series, a YA fantasy saga that distinguishes itself by having the villain as the main character. And I’m happy to report I loved it from beginning to end.

First, I’ll say it again, Carla Corvo is an amazing narrator. She brought Adelina to life with passion and emotion, without going overboard with her dramatic reading. She will forever be Adelina to me and I am so glad I went with the audio for this one!

The pace in this concluding book was really good, too. While the previous books had uneven pacing and a few slow spots, this one had constant action, revelations, twists. The conclusion was so fitting, too. It didn’t feel cheap or easy, it suited the tone of the story while making sense with what we knew of the characters and their world.

There is no doubt for me that I enjoyed this series much more than Marie Lu’s previous one, the dystopian world of Legend. This world felt impressive, imaginative, dark. Adelina’s progression as a villain was mesmerizing, and I loved how complex of a character she was. I feared her and disagreed with her choices as much as I had compassion for the things she went through. And that, to me, was the strongest point of the story.

It’s always a bit bittersweet to conclude a series you love, but I can’t wait to read more from Marie Lu. I know that, on top of a new series, she has a Batman book coming in 2017, so I’m sure she’ll be on my reading list next year too!

Reading Order :

  1. The Young Elites
  2. The Rose Society
  3. The Midnight Star
