About the Book  :

“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable–something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

My Thoughts :

A very pleasant surprise. Dark Matter was so fun, and such a page turner! With its fast pace, short writing and constant action, this book reads a lot like a good action movie and had I not been distracted by my birthday in August, I probably would have read it in one sitting. (In fact, the Man of the House read it on the plane this week, all at once, and thought it was a lot of fun!)

I wouldn’t say Blake Crouch’s writing is good, exactly, but it suits the story well. His style is very short, snappy, fast-moving. It doesn’t get you lost in details and world-building; instead, you jump from one moment to the next with little space to breath in between. And it works. I wasn’t bored for one moment.

The story itself was really fun, and like many good sci-fi thrillers, it has a bit of everything : humor, horror, existentialist questioning, and lots of action. It’s not too heavy on the science, which means readers who are more interested by the concept and the action will enjoy it. Even though I’ve read and seen many stories about parallel universes and the like, this one felt fresh and exciting.

I also really enjoyed the character of Jason Dessen. He was likable but not perfect, intelligent but flawed. I shared his fear for himself and for his family and hoped page after page that the author would give him a satisfying resolution.

And I won’t say how it ends, but I’ll say I thought the ending was quite good, too. It answers questions and resolves what needs to be resolved. All in all, I’d recommend it.

    • It’s not too heavy on the science-fiction aspect, and much more on the characters in action. I don’t know if that helps! 🙂

    • I can’t say whether you would enjoy it or not, and the characters are definitely adults, but I feel that something about the action and twists would make this book lots of fun for many different readers!
