the infinite seaThe Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey
Pages : 320
Genre : YA, Speculative Fiction
Series : The 5th Wave, book 2
My Rating : 3.5/5

About the Book  :

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

My Thoughts :

Quite recently, I read and reviewed The 5th Wave, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. I found it to be very entertaining and was looking forward to reading the sequel. I’m happy to report that I found The Infinite Sea to be almost equally entertaining!

This second novel in Rick Yancey’s apocalyptic series starts off well. I was extremely pleased to find out Ringer (a favorite secondary character from the first novel) was the first narrator. Ringer is hard, decisive, though. Not that Cassie isn’t though, in her own way; but I found Ringer to be more complex, and incredibly mysterious. I loved her narration. And I loved that she narrated a good chunk of the story, even though that meant we didn’t hear from Ben (maybe next time?)

The story moved in interesting ways. There were some surprising twists in there, which I won’t spoil of course; but the last third of the book revealed a plot more intricate than I had presumed. I love being surprised this way, and I can’t imagine what more I’ll find out with the last book. The first book had really surprised me on that front, and as the second part of a trilogy, I hadn’t expected The Infinite Sea to add so much more.

On the other side, I did find that the middle part of the book dragged. As much as I liked Cassie’s parts in the first novel, here I was annoyed with her. Maybe it was because her romance felt a little over the top, or maybe she suffered the comparison to personal favorite Ringer. In any case, even in the middle of action, I was a little bored by Cassie’s part and I was glad when the story finally focused on something else.

Overall, I really enjoyed this sequel. As with the first book, it was great entertainment and it was very nicely written, too. Rick Yancey has a way with words that stands out and I would happily read more from him once I am done with this series. Luckily, I won’t have to wait for too long since The Last Star will be released on May 24th!

Series Reading Order :

  1. The 5th Wave
  2. The Infinite Sea
  3. The Last Star
