My Thoughts :

Reading the last book of a series is always a little bittersweet; there’s the joy of finally knowing how the story will conclude for our heroes, mixed with the sadness of seeing them on a new adventure or the last time. But is there something more disappointing than a series ending on a disappointing book?

It breaks my heart to say that, after adoring the first book and quite liking the second one, I found If I Should Die to be the weakest in the series. It’s not that If I Should Die was a bad book. In fact, I liked how it concluded the story. It was full of action and we learned lots of new stuff on the history of revenants. In these aspects, the book had everything I could have hoped for.

Sadly I found the pacing to be quite uneven. It seemed like so much of the story focused on the romance, which was a shame really when the books have such a great cast of characters! I’m not sure if I have changed since reading the first novel, or if the romance was just too much, but I didn’t think Vincent and Kate had the same charm they had in when they first met.

I also felt like almost too much happened for one book, jumping from one scene to the other without giving me time to absorb all the information. So many twists! And revelations! And history! And kissing! Lots of kissing! None of these being bad things of course, but the quantity of them in that much space was more than I usually enjoy.

This being said, I found it to be a great conclusion to the story. I felt like the main plot was intriguing and dark, and while I did guess where it was going, it wasn’t too obvious. I was also happy to see Kate healing from the tragedy of her past. It was nice to have a character grow up and move on with different aspects of her life rather than being limited to the paranormal aspect of her story. I also loved, as usual, her close relationship with her sister. It was so refreshing to have her include her family rather than hiding things constantly!

Do I still recommend reading the Revenants series? Yes! Absolutely! While my enthusiasm has diminished since reading Die for Me, it is nonetheless a romantic trilogy with one of the most original twist on revenants/angels I have seen! It also has a beautiful Parisian setting and great characters. I am looking forward to seeing what Amy Plum writes next!

Series Reading Order :

  1. Die for Me
  2. Until I Die
  3. If I Should Die

  1. I still haven’t read this one yet, though I’m quite fond of the first two books. Sorry to hear the story and pacing was a little uneven. Sounds like it was crammed full of stuff! I’ll keep my expectations in check for this one. Great spoiler-free review 🙂
