I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
Pages : 433
Genre : Contemporary Fiction
Stand alone
My Rating : 4,5/5

What it’s about :

First, she loses her engagement ring, then her phone. Poppy’s day couldn’t possibly get worse, and she needs to fix things before her perfect fairy tale ending gets ruined!

Then, her luck turns when she finds an abandoned phone in a trash can – she’ll just keep it for a little while, until she gets her own phone and her ring back. When the owner wants his phone back, Poppy uses her charms and her wits to convince him of letting her keep the phone . Sam accepts, even despite her strong tendency to read his private messages, and before they know it, their accidental connection might just turn into something more…

My Thoughts :

I was going through my list of books read in 2012, slowly starting to prepare my “Best of 2012” list (one of my favorite time of the year on the blog!) when I realized I had yet to review some of my favorites this year. I’ve Got Your Number, read this past March, was one of those. I’m a long time fan of Sophie Kinsella. Even though I’ve grown a little tired of her Shopaholic series, her last two stand alone novels (this one and Twenties Girl) have been some of the most heartwarming books I got to read since I created the blog!

I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting much when I started reading this one. The summary felt a little silly and predictable to me, but in the end, I should have trusted Kinsella to work her magic : the story was entertaining and fluffy and awww-worthy from the start.

Poppy and Sam had so much chemistry! It is quite obvious, even from the summary, to see where the story is going, but the author manages to make the book fun and charming all along. There’s no boring moment, and Sam and Poppy were so absolutely adorable together – whether they were arguing or having a nice sharing moment. The emails and text messages, which sometimes get intrusive in other novels, were nicely paced and added a touch of life to the story, making the characters even more relatable.

I also loved that there was more going on than a simple romance. We learn more about Sam’s business, while Poppy has to deal with finding her ring, dealing with the in-laws and getting everything ready for the wedding. This is not without a few surprises along the way, and the build up to the ending was simply exciting (oh, that scene in the woods!)

Even though I sometimes wanted to hit Poppy on the head with a huge, heavy cushion, it was impossible for me not to like her. As for Sam, he was really likable too, and I always appreciate how Kinsella writes charming yet realistic men. Sure, he has his secrets like everyone else, but he’s not the stereotypical “mysteriously broody man with a deep dark secret”. He’s quite regular, when you think of it, but his connection with Poppy is so perfect it makes them both extraordinary.

To say I absolutely adored this book would be an understatement! It’s one of these books where predictability is comfort, and it’s the way there that makes it all exciting. I absolutely loved it, and I can’t wait for the author’s next book! Fortunately I don’t have to wait much longer, and her next novel, The Wedding Night, should be available in May of 2013

Similar Reading

Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

This is not as much “similar reading” as it is “another book from the author I really enjoyed”.

It’s a different story with a slightly supernatural twist – all done with a realistic yet entertaining touch! If you want to give Sophie Kinsella’s stand alone novels a try, this one is a great place to start. From my point of view, it has a bit more depth and feelings than her other novels, without losing any of the charm and romance.

  1. I was just thinking earlier that two of my favs of the year, I never reviewed. I’m going to be doing the same soon. I realllly need this one. I heart Sophie’s books.

    • I sometimes had a hard time reviewing my favorite books : I so want to do them justice that I tend to wait before reviewing them!

  2. I really like her work but don’t have this book yet. It’s going on my wish list.

    • It was really cute! Definitely a must-read for fans of her previous books. I hope you’ll like it too!

  3. I’m really regretting that I started giving Sophie Kinsella books a try just now and haven’t done it years earlier. I’ve known her when I first saw the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic and kinda liked it. To find out it was based from a novel. Back then I tried to search some of her works and even though I liked the movie, I don’t have much interest in reading books back then. Now that I’ve grown up and my interests changes (starting to like reading novels now), I thought why don’t I give this author a try. I’ve read 3 books of her in total and I’ve Got Your Number is the latest one. I had high hopes in this book since I’ve been looking for good reviews and ratings about it and I wasn’t disappointed.

The whole plot itself might be a bit cliche or some the typical or meh storyline but the whole journey of the people involved are very interesting and fun. And i might just have to pinpoint some of the scenes that struck me the most and I seriously need to get it out to my system and fins someone to share it with. Let’s start with Poppy. Poppy is a very nice girl for a heroine and I somehow kind of relate to her at times like feeling inferior around someone and your head’s overthinking things and I guess that’s our downfall. Its still one of the battles I’m trying to overcome. But even though she has that kind of character, she’s a lovely and cheerful individual. I started to like her when she did some kind of a ‘small presentation’ to that Japanese boss or something and I swear to God that was freaking hilarious! I also tried to do it and think what it looked like and I at that moment I understand how stupid Poppy looked while doing the Beyonce thing. HAHAHA!

As for his fiance and his family, I just thought If I were in her situation, I can’t stand it. Imagine your surrounded with people who talks about different kinds of pastries and all you know is that its just a piece of bread (for example). And worse they’ll be asking your opinion how does it taste like or make critics about the texture etc and you’re like “It great! It tastes like … flour.” Anyways, the 1 month relationship and a sudden engagement for me is quite a shock. In real life that kind of set up is very rare unless you’re some kind of Disney Princess that actually met her true love right after they met, that’s even worse. (insert Queen Elsa)

As for Sam Roxton, I strongly agree with you. He isn’t some kind of a dark, mysterious character you have to uncover to undestand. Maybe at their first ‘meeting’ he seems a little bossy but to be honest, he’s quite charming. If you really pay attention to their conversation, it shows how normal a guy he is with his wit and own charisma. As the story goes, his character is growing on me. And both of them obviously helped each other out in their character development. And what made me love him the most is that he’s not a leave-him-choose-me type of guy. In their conversation, it seems to that he really cares for her- for what she feels. Although the ‘feeling’ is already there, I don’t think his feelings is his priority. He just wants Poppy to be with someone she’s sure of.

And I really enjoyed the whole plot. There are even some parts that I totally love.
    1. Again the first one, the Beyonce thing. It was hilarious! Funnier part is, Sam just got there and just enjoying the view.
    2. Next is the scrabble conversation, I actually believed it was him who thought of the words, only to find out he googled it (internet).
    3. Unforgettable and funniest one, is when they went to the jewelry shop and the girl was just so upset about the ring they bought. Poor girl. *might have to reread it, so hilarious!*
    4. Is it just me or I find the whole finding the culprit scenes right from the took down notes incident really entertaining. I like some kind of mystery! Also they had more time together than just talking on the phone.
    5. That scene on the train, they’re playing games like who gets the phone first, who’s email/text is that for. *small details but I find them cute 🙂 *
    6. The finding in the woods! This for me, is the most sincere and genuine part. Ofcourse we can’t forget that Sam wrapped his arms around Poppy but the EXCHANGES OF MESSAGES. It was soo good. At that point, when Poppy told Sam she’s glad it was his phone she picked up I was like *AWWWEEEEEEE then sniffs*
    7. When everything seems falling to place in Sam’s company and the phone has to be surrendered and all those conversations. Gosh! they were reading it and there are lot of butterflies in my stomach

    8.
    a. Everything at the wedding involving those two! Their conversation before Poppy walks the aisle (My heart broke for Sam when he typed ‘No’ not once but many times! And that 🙁 smiley
    b. The text he sent to all who attended the wedding. To stop the wedding.
    c. When a lady asked if he was her lover and all we get is another reply. The reason my heart is overflowing with happiness. ” Lover? I don’t know. I don’t know if she loves me. I don’t know if I love her.” ” All I can say is, she’s the one I think about. All the time. She’s the voice I want to hear. She’s the face I hope to see.

I guess it ends here. I really enjoyed this book. A lot!

    • Wow, that’s a great analysis/review! This brought back memories 🙂 It’s been a few years since I’ve read it but I still remember so many scenes vividly (like in the woods!) I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this book.
