My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent
Pages : 296
Genre : YA, Urban Fantasy
Series : Souls Screamers, book 3
My Rating :

What it’s about :

When one of her boyfriend’s best friends crashes into her car, Kaylee discovers something terrifying : Demon’s breath has traveled into her world and is now the new cool drug at school. Not only is Demon’s breath highly addictive, it is also a killing substance that can make its user crazy – literally.

Once more, Kaylee must try to save those she love before it’s too late – but how can she strop Demon’s breath from killing her friends while her boyfriend is acting weirder and meaner by the minute?

My Soul to Save hadn’t work that well for me, and so I was a bit anxious about this third book in the series – especially since I completely love Vincent’s Shifters series! Luckily, My Soul to Keep was a good mystery and offered some interesting character developments.

I wasn’t sure how the Demon’s breath plot would be introduced, but Vincent kept it interesting by not making her novel preachy. Sure, drugs are bad and it’s pretty clear Kaylee doesn’t approve, but the idea is carried through the characters’ actions rather than being the book’s directive. Kaylee isn’t there to judge but to act, and she’s more focussed on putting an end to the dangerous situation than on reprimanding those in the wrong.

Her relationship with Nash has evolved so much since the first book! It’s hard to mention this part of My Soul to Keep without spoiling it, but very soon in the beginning Nash’s perfection takes some huge hits. These changes in their romance and in Nash’s personality were surprising, but also forced Kaylee to think for herself more. (Her journey reminds me a little of Faye’s from the Shifters series, who starts as an annoying werecat and develops into a strong leader.) I’m not sure where Vincent is planning on taking Kaylee next, but the poor girl certainly isn’t getting anything the easy way. For sure it gave her and Nash more depth (which, let’s say it, he desperately needed), and this made me care for them more than Nash’s perfection could ever have.

My Soul to Keep is without a doubt an original book in an original series; with its intricate story and its multiple revelations, the book allows the reader to discover some different aspects of this unique universe. If my Amazon list is right, the next book is planned for November 2010 and I am really looking forward to reading it!

Series Reading Order :

  1. My Soul to Take
  2. My Soul to Save
  3. My Soul to Keep
  4. My Soul to Save (November 2010)
